Bollywood actor Imran Khan found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this Saturday after being detained by Mumbai Police. The actor was picked up at August Kranti Maidan, the designated venue for a protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) call. Taking the situation in stride, Imran shared a candid photo of himself sitting inside a police van on his Instagram account, captioning the post with a witty, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”
Speaking to the media while on the ground, the actor clarified that he was not representing any political group or organization. Instead, he insisted he was present strictly as a concerned citizen of Mumbai. Imran raised pointed questions regarding the heavy police presence and the restrictions placed on the movement of demonstrators. “I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people’s voices being suppressed?” he stated.
The actor’s detention was part of a larger security operation at August Kranti Maidan, where Mumbai Police confirmed that over 400 individuals were taken into custody. The unrest was not limited to Mumbai, as reports indicate that approximately 1,000 protesters were also detained in the national capital while attempting to march toward Jantar Mantar. These demonstrators are calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, leading to widespread police action across the region.
