KC Bokadia shares how Shah Rukh Khan refused to take his remaining film fee

Bollywood filmmaker KC Bokadia recently opened up about a heartwarming gesture from superstar Shah Rukh Khan during the production of their 2002 film Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam.

Bollywood filmmaker KC Bokadia recently opened up about a heartwarming gesture from superstar Shah Rukh Khan during the production of their 2002 film Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. The director revealed that despite a formal agreement for a fee of Rs 2 crore, the actor insisted on waiving the remaining Rs 95 lakh balance. Bokadia had already paid Rs 1.05 crore, but Khan felt a deep sense of personal respect for the filmmaker and did not want to burden him with the rest of the payment.

Recalling the interaction, Bokadia shared that the actor had conveyed his decision through the filmmaker’s son. Khan reportedly stated that he knew the director would go to great lengths, even selling assets, to settle the debt, and he refused to let that happen. Khan famously told them that he would rather attend a wedding for five minutes to earn the money himself than take it from a man he held in such high regard. The production team, however, insisted on maintaining their professional integrity, telling the star that they were men of their word.

The matter resurfaced years later when the two crossed paths at Empire Studio while Bokadia was working on a film mix. Even after several years had passed, Khan remained steadfast in his decision. When the filmmaker brought up the pending remuneration, the actor casually brushed it off, asking what money the director was referring to and insisting that it be left in the past. This anecdote highlights the genuine warmth and generosity that has long defined the superstar’s relationships within the industry.

Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, directed by KS Adhiyaman, remains a notable project in Bollywood history for bringing together the powerhouse trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Salman Khan. Beyond the box office performance of the romantic drama, it is these behind-the-scenes stories of mutual respect and kindness that continue to endear the King of Bollywood to his colleagues and fans alike.
