Veteran filmmaker KC Bokadia reveals Rajesh Khanna felt the pain of his fading stardom

Veteran filmmaker KC Bokadia has offered a poignant glimpse into the final years of Bollywood’s original superstar, Rajesh Khanna.

Veteran filmmaker KC Bokadia has offered a poignant glimpse into the final years of Bollywood’s original superstar, Rajesh Khanna. Reflecting on the legend’s later life, Bokadia recalled a man who remained a ‘lion’ at heart but struggled deeply with the professional isolation that followed his box-office decline. In an emotional conversation, the filmmaker recounted how Khanna candidly admitted that his early-career choices, specifically ignoring film producers, eventually came back to haunt him. The actor reportedly told Bokadia, ‘This is entirely my own fault. I ignored the producers, and now I am paying the price.’

Bokadia painted a somber picture of Khanna’s office on Mumbai’s Linking Road, where the superstar once stood by as the constant stream of visitors dried up. As his films stopped drawing crowds, the industry’s fickle nature became apparent, with producers who once queued for his dates slowly fading away. Bokadia noted that while this is the harsh reality of the film business, it was a painful transition for an actor who had once enjoyed unprecedented popularity. Despite these professional hardships, Bokadia fondly remembered Khanna’s warmth, recalling how the actor personally cooked ‘kadhi and gatte ki sabzi’ for him, displaying a hospitality that remained intact even when his career was at a crossroads.

When discussing the shift in audience tastes—often attributed to the rise of Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Angry Young Man’ persona—Bokadia dismissed the idea of a simple formula for success, calling it ‘a game of fate.’ The filmmaker, who collaborated with Khanna on projects like ‘Main Tera Dushman’, ‘Paap Ka Ant’, and ‘Pyaar Zindagi Hai’, emphasized that predicting stardom is never an exact science. Through his own experiences with industry icons like Rajkumar and Amitabh Bachchan, Bokadia highlighted the unpredictable nature of the spotlight, ultimately remembering Khanna not just as a fading star, but as a gentleman who faced his twilight years with raw, human vulnerability.
