Veteran actor Anupam Kher has stepped forward to support singer Daler Mehndi following a controversial incident during a recent cultural event in Uttarakhand. A video from the event went viral showing a minister confronting the ‘Tunak Tunak Tun’ hitmaker on stage, an interaction that Kher found deeply upsetting. Taking to Instagram, the actor questioned the necessity of the public outburst, arguing that even if the minister had grievances regarding the performance, they should have been addressed privately to maintain the dignity of a senior artist.
Kher highlighted that Daler Mehndi has spent over three decades contributing to the music industry and bringing joy to audiences. He expressed his disappointment, noting that the singer has been struggling with his health recently. “An artist spends an entire lifetime earning respect. Surely, his contribution deserves appreciation. I am deeply sorry that you had to go through this,” Kher wrote, while also clarifying his long-standing knowledge of Mehndi as a kind-hearted individual who does not consume alcohol.
The controversy began after Uttarakhand Minister Subodh Uniyal publicly alleged that Daler Mehndi appeared disoriented, was lip-syncing, and was under the influence of alcohol during his set. These accusations were swiftly addressed by the singer’s brother, Mika Singh, who released a video message defending him. Mika explained that Daler has been recovering from a recent operation and has been unwell for the past two years, which may have impacted his speech. He firmly dismissed the allegations of alcohol consumption, pointing out that many performers use backing tracks today and that his brother continues to perform for his fans despite his ongoing health challenges.
