The trailer for Abhinay Deo’s upcoming film Doosra has officially dropped, and it is already winning big endorsements from some of India’s biggest names. Bollywood icon Anil Kapoor and Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma have both come out in support of the film, which hits theatres on October 23. The movie revolves around the historic 2002 NatWest Series final, where India pulled off a legendary victory against England at Lord’s, a match that remains etched in the memory of every cricket fan.
At the heart of the film is the iconic image of Sourav Ganguly waving his shirt from the Lord’s balcony, a moment that serves as more than just a sporting highlight. In Doosra, this act of defiance becomes the catalyst for Tara, a young girl living in a conservative household, who finds the courage to fight against societal norms after witnessing the celebration on television. Director Abhinay Deo describes the film as an emotional journey, framing Ganguly’s famous celebration as a symbolic shedding of colonial baggage that inspires a young girl to claim her own freedom.
Anil Kapoor expressed his admiration for how the film seamlessly weaves reality with fiction, noting that the 2002 win gave an entire generation the belief that India could triumph on any stage. Rohit Sharma, who was just 15 at the time of the match, shared similar nostalgia, stating that the film beautifully captures the significance of that win beyond the boundaries of the cricket pitch. The project is produced by Masha Sajdeh and Rohan Sajdeh and features a cast including Plabita Borthakur, Ankur Vikal, Samidha Guru, Tvisha Seema, and Krishna Gokani, with a score composed by Ram Sampat.
