The Hindi film industry is mourning the loss of ace filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 57. According to filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, Gupta died after sustaining a head injury at his residence. Known for his distinct style in the crime-thriller genre, Gupta left an indelible mark on Bollywood with cult classics like Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala, and Kaabil. His passing has left his long-time collaborator and close friend, Sanjay Dutt, completely heartbroken.
Sanjay Dutt took to social media to share a moving tribute, posting a series of nostalgic photos that chronicled their decades-long friendship. The two shared a professional bond that spanned several iconic films, including Aatish: Feel the Fire, Jung, Musafir, and Zinda. In his emotional note, Dutt addressed the filmmaker as his brother, admitting that the reality of his passing is still hard to process. He remembered their deep conversations and the family-like bond they shared, noting that life simply won’t be the same without his presence.
Beyond the personal loss, Dutt made a significant promise to honour Gupta’s legacy. The actor revealed that the two had been actively discussing the sequel to their 2002 hit, Kaante, just recently. Determined to bring his friend’s vision to life, Dutt pledged to produce Kaante 2 as a tribute to Gupta. The original 2002 film, which was an unofficial adaptation of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, remains a landmark project featuring an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, and Mahesh Manjrekar.
Sanjay Gupta’s career was defined by his passionate storytelling and his ability to craft gritty, high-stakes narratives. From his 2021 directorial Mumbai Saga to his recent production Visfot and his final directorial venture The Miranda Brothers, released earlier this year, Gupta remained an active and influential figure in cinema. Friends and colleagues from the fraternity, including Ashoke Pandit, have remembered him as a wonderful narrator and a vibrant personality who was taken from the industry far too soon.
