Nimrat Kaur reveals why she turned down multiple roles after The Lunchbox

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift, Dasvi, and The Family Man, recently opened up about the massive impact The Lunchbox had on her career. While the 2013 film catapulted her to international fame, it also brought a wave of repetitive offers that she wasn’t ready to accept. Nimrat revealed that she was approached for nearly 10 to 15 projects portraying the same archetype: a trapped, unhappy, and lonely housewife. Determined to avoid being typecast, she fought tooth and nail to turn these roles down and wait for something more substantial.

Addressing the perception that her post-Lunchbox career gap was a calculated move, the actor clarified that it was actually a result of her busy shooting schedule for projects like Homeland and Airlift. She noted that she never intended to repeat the magic of her character, Ila, by playing a similar version of her again. Even today, Nimrat remains vigilant, admitting that if a script feels like it is veering into the territory of a ‘bored, sad, or lonely’ housewife, she politely declines. Her journey has been a curious one; she recalls that during her modeling days, she was often told she looked ‘too western’ to play an Indian domestic role, only for that perception to flip entirely after her breakthrough performance.

Preparing for the role of Ila was a deeply personal process for Nimrat, who opted for a non-traditional approach. She embraced a lack of vanity, gaining weight and skipping elaborate hair and makeup to truly embody the character’s quiet isolation. By working closely with the art director to set up a functional, lived-in kitchen in a Malad apartment, she ensured every detail felt authentic. Although she shared the screen with the legendary Irrfan Khan, she revealed they barely interacted on set, sharing only a brief moment during a reading and a single scene where their characters were in the same café, marking a subtle yet iconic collaboration in Indian cinema history.
