Nimrat Kaur reveals why she turned down multiple roles after The Lunchbox

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the struggle of avoiding typecasting following her breakout performance in The Lunchbox.

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the struggle of avoiding typecasting following her breakout performance in The Lunchbox. Despite the film achieving global acclaim at Cannes and across 75 countries, the actor revealed that she was flooded with repetitive offers to play the same archetype—the trapped, lonely, and unhappy housewife. Nimrat admitted she fought hard to avoid these roles, turning down nearly 15 projects because she refused to repeat what she had already perfected on screen.

Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen wasn’t a calculated career move but rather a result of back-to-back international commitments. After the whirlwind success of The Lunchbox, she immediately dove into the filming of Homeland, which kept her occupied for months, followed by a year-long schedule for Airlift. She noted that while the industry often tries to box actors into specific personas, she remains vigilant about the scripts she chooses, often rejecting projects the moment she senses a return to the bored and lonely character trope.

Reflecting on her iconic role as Ila, Nimrat shared the deep, organic preparation that went into the character. She intentionally stepped away from vanity, choosing to gain weight and ditch hair and makeup to capture the character’s quiet isolation. By working closely with the art director to make the kitchen feel lived-in and drawing inspiration from the women she observed during her childhood in small cities, she created a performance that felt hauntingly authentic. The actor also mused on the shifting perceptions of the industry, noting that while she was once told she looked ‘too western’ for Indian roles during her modeling days, The Lunchbox completely flipped that narrative overnight.
