Nimrat revealed that she was flooded with nearly 15 offers to play variations of the same character—a trapped, unhappy, and lonely homemaker—all of which she fought tooth and nail to reject.
Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen was not a calculated strategy but a result of long-term commitments. She explained that after the whirlwind success of The Lunchbox, she immediately dove into filming for the hit series Homeland and the blockbuster Airlift, which kept her occupied for nearly two years. The actor emphasized that she has always been protective of her craft, deliberately holding out for projects that didn’t mirror the “beautifully done” work she had already delivered as the character Ila.
Preparing for the role of Ila was a deeply immersive process for Nimrat, who spent months internalizing the character’s quiet isolation. She embraced a natural look, opting for no makeup and even choosing to gain weight to better embody the simplicity of the homemaker. By collaborating closely with the art director to make the kitchen space feel lived-in and authentic, Nimrat crafted a performance that felt deeply personal. She also noted the irony of industry perceptions, recalling that she was once told she looked “too western” for Indian roles before The Lunchbox flipped the script and made producers see her exclusively through an Indian lens.
