Nimrat Kaur reveals why she turned down multiple roles after The Lunchbox

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the professional hurdles she faced following the global success of The Lunchbox.

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the professional hurdles she faced following the global success of The Lunchbox. While the film earned her international acclaim for her portrayal of Ila, a lonely homemaker in Mumbai, it also led to a wave of repetitive casting offers. Nimrat revealed that she was approached for nearly 10 to 15 projects featuring characters almost identical to her role in the film—trapped, unhappy housewives seeking an escape from their marriages. Firmly deciding against being typecast, the actor chose to turn these roles down, opting to wait for scripts that offered more substance.

Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography during that period, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen was not a calculated strategy but a result of her busy international schedule. She spent several months filming the acclaimed series Homeland, followed by a year-long commitment to the blockbuster Airlift. Regarding her preparation for The Lunchbox, the actor shared that she took a deep dive into the character’s isolation. She intentionally set aside her vanity, gained weight, and worked closely with the art director to create an authentic kitchen environment in a small Malad apartment, ensuring her performance remained grounded and believable.

Reflecting on the industry’s fickle nature, Nimrat noted how perceptions of her identity shifted drastically after the film’s release. Early in her career as a model, she was often told she looked too Western to portray a traditional Indian woman, but that narrative flipped entirely after her breakthrough performance. Despite the shared success of The Lunchbox, Nimrat also shared a surprising detail about her collaboration with the legendary Irrfan Khan; the two shared almost no screen time during production and barely interacted, as their characters’ stories unfolded through their separate, parallel lives.
