Nimrat Kaur reveals why she turned down multiple roles after the success of The Lunchbox

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the professional hurdles she faced following the global success of The Lunchbox. While the 2013 film catapulted her to international fame, it also brought a flood of repetitive offers. Nimrat revealed that she was frequently approached to play variations of Ila, her character in the film—a lonely, trapped, and unhappy housewife. Determined to avoid being pigeonholed, she fought tooth and nail to reject these roles, noting that she would rather wait for the right project than repeat a performance she felt was already beautifully captured.

Addressing the perception that her career gaps were a calculated strategy, Nimrat clarified that her filmography was dictated by the intensity of her international commitments. Following the Cannes premiere of The Lunchbox, she spent months touring globally before heading straight into a six-to-eight-month filming schedule for the hit series Homeland, followed by a year-long commitment for Airlift. She explained that these long-term projects were the real reason for her absence from the screen, rather than any deliberate professional hiatus.

Looking back at her preparation for the iconic role of Ila, Nimrat shared the lengths she went to in order to embody the character’s quiet isolation. She embraced a natural look, choosing to forgo hair and makeup and even putting on a little weight to feel less like herself. By collaborating closely with the art director to ensure the kitchen felt lived-in and authentic, she sought to create a performance that felt deeply grounded. The actor also reflected on the irony of industry perceptions, noting that while she was once told she looked too Western for domestic roles, the success of The Lunchbox completely shifted the industry’s view of her range overnight.
