She admitted to fighting tooth and nail to avoid being typecast, turning down roughly 10 to 15 projects that wanted her to play the same trope of a trapped, unhappy housewife yearning to escape her marriage.
For Nimrat, the decision to hold out for better scripts was deliberate. She explained that she had no interest in repeating a performance that felt so complete and special, and she remains vigilant even today to ensure she doesn’t fall back into that specific character space. Addressing the perceived gap in her filmography during that period, the actor clarified that it wasn’t a calculated strategy but rather the result of back-to-back commitments for international projects like Homeland and the film Airlift, which kept her occupied for well over a year.
Reflecting on her iconic transformation for The Lunchbox, Nimrat shared that her preparation was deeply personal and non-traditional. She intentionally let go of vanity, gained weight, and avoided hair and makeup to capture the softness and isolation of her character. By working closely with the art director to make the kitchen set feel like a lived-in space, she ensured her performance felt authentic. Interestingly, she also noted how the industry’s perception of her shifted drastically; while she was once told she looked too Western for domestic roles, the success of The Lunchbox suddenly made filmmakers see her as the quintessential Indian woman, proving just how much one transformative role can change the course of an actor’s career.
